Dispute Resolution Services
Mohawk College values the peaceful and positive expression of conflict within the college community, an environment in which all individuals are treated with respect and dignity. Early, informal resolution of disputes and the maintenance of open lines of communication are critical elements of a respectful environment. The assistance of a mediator is available to all students and staff on a confidential and voluntary basis.
Mediation is a process of direct negotiation between individuals in conflict, whereby a trained, experienced, neutral advisor - the mediator - assists the parties to clarify issues, identify options and formulate an agreement. Mediation allows the parties to control the process and the outcome while working to reduce conflict, anger, mistrust and misperceptions.
Any individual in the conflict may request mediation. Mediation is voluntary and must be acceptable to all parties involved. The mediator will meet each individual separately to ascertain if mediation is appropriate and to arrive at an understanding of the issues from each perspective.
If mediation is both appropriate and agreeable to all parties, a joint meeting will be scheduled for the parties by the mediator. If mediation is successful, the mediator will draft a Memorandum of Understanding, an agreement in good faith, reflecting the resolution of the issues. All parties and the mediator will be expected to sign the Memorandum.
If mediation is unsuccessful, the parties will be advised of other options for consideration.
LGBTIQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer, Questioning)
The usual issues that all college students have to deal with can be more difficult if you are trying to develop a positive gender identity, sexual orientation or coping with discrimination because you are part of a minority group in our society. The specific issues that you might encounter if you identify as LGBTIQ may include, depression/anxiety, guilt, substance abuse, relationship/intimacy issues, heterosexism, homophobia, and transphobia. There may be a huge strain on you if you feel that you cannot be yourself and have to always decide what you can or cannot reveal about yourself.
As a College student, you have a right
-
to be considered a mature adult
-
to have your needs be of equal importance to the needs of others
