Global Political Economy
Our Department has an exceptionally strong concentration of expertise in Global Political Economy (GPE). Such faculty include:
- Stephen McBride - state and restructuring;
- Robert O’Brien - Global Labour Movements;
- Tony Porter - International Financial Standards and Codes;
- Richard Stubb - East Asian Capitalism
These faculty members are also known for their long standing contributions to International Political Economy (IPE), including:
- Tony Porter’s work on the international
regulation of finance and private authority in international affairs

Robert O’Brien’s work on multilateral economic institutions and global
social movements
- Richard Stubbs’ work on Asia-Pacific Relations and
- Stephen McBride's work on neoliberal globalization and North American political economy.
In addition, two of the faculty members have edited or written IPE text books:
- Richard Stubbs and Underhill’s three
editions of Political Economy and the Changing Global Order
- Robert O’Brien and Mark Williams’ three editions of Global Political Economy; Evolution and Dynamics.
The work of all of these faculty members is distinguished by their shared interest in the institutional characteristics of the governance of the contemporary global political economy. The work of other members of our Department intersects with IPE themes as well, including:
- Henry Jacek’s work on international business associations,
- Don Wells’ work on codes of conduct for multinational corporations,
- Charlotte Yates’ work on the auto industry.
