2011-12 Distinguished Visiting Speaker
Dr. Philip McMichael, International Professor of Development Sociology, Cornell University
21st Century Development: Crisis and Renewal
Thursday, September 29, 7:30 p.m.
Council Chambers, Gilmour Hall 111
Author of Settlers and the Agrarian Question (1984) and Development and Social Change: A Global Perspective (2008), Philip McMichael has published widely on agrarian movements, land questions and food regimes. His current research centres the role of agri-food systems in the making of the modern world and explores the politics of globalization through the structuring of agri-food relations. During his career, he has worked with the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development, the International Planning Committee for Food Sovereignty and the international peasant coalition, La Vía Campesina.
McMichael's public lecture will consider the impact and significance of the conjunction of food, financial, energy and climate crises, and how they inform development visioning and practices that,
together, foreshadow a Sustainability Project.
