How to Become an External Affiliate

The IGHC has two categories of affiliation for scholars outside of McMaster University - Visiting Scholar and Adjunct Scholar. Individuals seeking visiting or adjunct scholar status are required to complete a short application form which must be approved by the Director and the Associate Director.

Applications for visiting and adjunct scholar positions are accepted year round. Please enquire about application forms.

Visiting Scholar

This form of affiliation involves a scholar from another university, research institute or organization spending time at McMaster University. The Institute will undertake the provision of office space and library privileges. The tenure of the visit may vary depending upon mutual agreement. Applicants will be required to show how their research project furthers the aims of the research agenda of the Institute. In return for being hosted by the Institute, visiting scholars will be asked to contribute to the intellectual life of the Institute by interacting with faculty and graduate students and giving a seminar or submitting a working paper.

Adjunct Scholar

This form of affiliation allows an individual to associate with the Institute on a virtual basis. They will not be given office space or library privileges, but are welcome to join in all Institute activities and use the Institute as a base and contact point for their research activities. In return for affiliating with the Institute, adjunct scholars will be asked to contribute to the intellectual life of the Institute by interacting with faculty and graduate students and giving a seminar or submitting a working paper. Affiliation will usually be for a one year period and is renewable.
