Summer Internship Opportunity

Established in 2011, the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research (CCGHR) - IGHC Summer Internship seeks a motivated graduate student from the Institute to fill a 10-week summer internship position.  Based in Hamilton, this volunteer position provides the successful applicant with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with a globally-focused Canadian health research organization.  Working alongside a McMaster University-affiliated CCGHR member, the intern has the opportunity to contribute to one or more health-oriented research projects that connect Canadian researchers with researchers in the developing world.

"This internship expanded my understanding of global health processes as I was introduced to the interdisciplinary nature of global health research initiatives and activities taking place across Canada. I developed an understanding of global health research as an activity that requires expertise from many different disciplines. All three projects that I was involved with revealed the necessity of taking an interdisciplinary approach to global health research. This countered my original expectations of the internship in the sense that I expected the majority of global health research projects in Canada to be conducted by medical researchers. In actuality, global health research is a cross-cutting priority for numerous faculties."
- Charis Enns, 2011 CCGHR-IGHC Student Intern

The Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research is a not-for-profit organization promoting better and more equitable health worldwide through the production and use of knowledge.  Focused on addressing health research challenges in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) in order to reduce health disparities, the CCGHR is a Canada-based global network committed to:

  • strengthening capacities of individuals, institutions and systems in Canada and LMICs to produce and use knowledge;
  • speaking as Canada’s voice for global health research;
  • building effective, equitable and respectful south-north research partnerships;
  • connecting people, ideas and expertise;
  • learning from and communicating our work.

Thus, the CCGHR seeks an intern whose research interests are both health-related and align in some way with the above goals.  Accordingly, the internship involves engaging in one or more of the CCGHR’s current initiatives, with the goal of connecting such work to the intern’s current research focus.  Potential tasks may include the following: research project assistance, grant writing, meeting and/or conference planning, communicating with CCGHR membership, helping to develop new research initiatives –- all of which will help to familiarize an intern with the research and funding landscape for global health research.  Specific details of the internship are determined once a supervisor/set of initiatives is identified.

Considering that the intern is also focused on completing the MRP portion of her/his MA from May to August, the maximum requisite hours for this position is 10 hours/week.

"My exposure to specific projects and activities that extended beyond the research and essay writing of my course work provided me with invaluable practical experience. As such, I feel better prepared to integrate theory, research and skills in my future studies and work place."
- Charis Enns

Like globalization, health is broadly connected to a number of social, political, and economic issues and embraces interdisciplinary perspectives and approaches to pressing questions and problems.  Thus, all interested students are encouraged to apply, regardless of their disciplinary background.

Application Deadline: March 31, 2012
