Housing and Other Information

For incoming graduate students we have put together a few hints and tips from previous students concerning housing in and around McMaster. In addition, we have provided a few links which should help you get your housing search started online.

Hints and Tips

  • Online housing sources are a start but nothing beats coming to McMaster and looking for housing first hand!
  • If you are looking for housing starting in September you should probably start looking about 2 months in advance to ensure yourself of a good selection of units.
  • Take careful note of the walking distance to the campus (Kenneth Taylor Hall in particular). What may seem like a nice 35 minute walk in the summer, might seem like torture in the winter!
  • Good and cheap housing can be found a little farther away from campus but make sure that you are close to bus routes or have a car and parking permit.
  • Don't forget to consider how far away grocery stores are!

Housing Links

  • McMaster University Housing Services: http://housing.mcmaster.ca/
This great website gives information on University residences and links to the official off campus student housing office (which posts some advertisements for housing around McMaster University).
  • McMaster University International Students Advisor: http://oisa.mcmaster.ca

This website provides a handbook for international students at McMaster and announces various events and social activities geared towards international students studying at McMaster.

Another good source of available housing is from the online version of the Hamilton Spectator, Hamilton daily newspaper. If you are looking for housing sales or other types of accommodation, try the home page of the Hamilton Spectator and click on "classified".
