Career placements are unpaid job shadow experiences that provide exposure to various occupations/ professions in preparation for future careers. These placements allow you to spend 2-4 hours per week for 4-6 weeks shadowing various professionals within a host organization.
Career Placements provide an opportunity for you to:
- be exposed to professionals that are currently working in a career field that is of interest;
- increase your knowledge about various career options within a particular field;
- make more informed decisions about whether a certain career is "right" for you;
- see first-hand how your classroom learning can apply to work-related settings; and,
- expand your network of contacts and build your resume.
Some of the things you may be doing while completing a placement include:
- touring the work space;
- shadowing the person while they complete work tasks;
- sitting in on meetings and other work-related events/activities;
- conducting
'information interviews' where you will be able to ask
questions related to the role or field (e.g. relating to the education
required, typical work hours, work/life balance etc.);
and,
- meeting other staff within the area.
