CASE 10

Mikael is a 2nd year medical student on an international clinical elective.  Over the course of her pediatrics rotation she gets to know a young girl and her family.  The girl has diabetes and requires insulin but the family cannot afford the treatment.  As a result, the patient has been hospitalised several times.  Mikael questions whether she can do something to help this patient and family.  She considers giving them money to buy insulin for the girl but is unsure whether she should do so.  When she discusses this situation with a local medical student, the student discourages her from giving her money.
