GTA West Social Housing and Health Study
Does receiving subsidized housing for the first time improve mental health for adults in low income households? This is the key research question posed by the GTA West (Greater Toronto Area West) study, a research project taking place in the City of Toronto, City of Hamilton, and the regional municipalities of Halton and Peel.

The study is the first of its kind in Canada--and among the first in the world--to follow a cohort of adults during their first 18 months in rent-geared-to-income housing.
The GTA West study explores the complexity of the impacts of rent-geared-to-income on mental and general health by considering the role played by changes in neighbourhood and housing quality; increased affordability; changes in housing security; availability of coping resources; non-housing stressors; gender; and ethnicity.
